Uploading and downloading files on your server
Here's how to move files from your PC to the server, or download files from the server to your PC. Find the connection info (IP, account, password) in the "Connection info" card under Dashboard → server details.
Linux server — SFTP programs (easiest)
You can move files by dragging and dropping, just like in File Explorer. They use the same connection info as SSH.
- WinSCP (Windows only, free)
- FileZilla (Windows / macOS, free)
WinSCP connection settings
- When you launch WinSCP, the "Login" window appears.
- File protocol: SFTP
- Host name: server IP / Port number:
22 - User name, password: the connection info from your Dashboard
- Login → Drag files from the left (your PC) to the right (the server).
FileZilla connects the same way: enter sftp://server-ip in "Host" and 22 as the port.
Linux server — command line (scp)
You can use this right away in Windows PowerShell or a macOS/Linux terminal.
# Your PC → server (one file)
scp ./backup.zip username@server-ip:~/
# Your PC → server (an entire folder)
scp -r ./my-project username@server-ip:~/
# Server → your PC
scp username@server-ip:~/backup.zip ./
If you're using VS Code Remote-SSH, just drag files into the Explorer on the left side of VS Code to upload them to the server.
Windows server — copying over Remote Desktop
Copy and paste
While connected via Remote Desktop, you can copy a file on your PC with Ctrl + C and paste it on the server screen with Ctrl + V. Large files may be slow or get cut off partway, so we recommend sharing a drive, as described below.
Share your PC's drives
- Run
mstsc→ Show Options at the bottom - Local Resources tab → More → check the drive to share (e.g., D:)
- Once connected, your computer's drives appear under "This PC" in the server's File Explorer. Copy files from there.
Uploads aren't working
- Permission denied — You don't have write permission for that folder. Upload to your home folder (
~/) first, then move the file within the server. - Can't connect at all — First check whether SSH works. Can't connect to your server
- Security Zone servers — Uploads and downloads count toward traffic too. Check your traffic usage before moving large files.
