Setting up Korean language and Korea time on a Windows server

Here's how to change things when your Windows server's clock doesn't match Korea time, Korean text appears garbled in programs, or the display is in English. Enter the commands below in PowerShell opened as administrator. (Search for PowerShell in the Start menu → right-click → Run as administrator)

1. Set Korea time

Set-TimeZone -Id "Korea Standard Time"
Get-TimeZone # Success if it shows (UTC+09:00) Seoul

To change it on screen instead, go to Settings → Time & language → Date & time → Time zone and choose "(UTC+09:00) Seoul".

2. When Korean text is garbled in programs

If Korean text shows up as ??? or strange characters in a game server console or an older program, change the "system locale" to Korean.

Set-WinSystemLocale ko-KR
Restart-Computer

This reboots the server, so save and close any running programs first. Reconnect with Remote Desktop 1–2 minutes after the reboot.

To change it on screen instead, go to Control Panel → Region → Administrative → Change system locale and choose "Korean (Korea)". If "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support" is checked in the same window, it can actually cause some Korean programs to show garbled text, so if the problem continues, try unchecking it.

3. Switch the display to Korean

Install-Language ko-KR
Set-WinUILanguageOverride -Language ko-KR
Set-Culture ko-KR

Install-Language downloads language files, so it may take a few minutes. When it's done, sign out and sign back in, and the display will switch to Korean.

If you get an error saying the command doesn't exist, set it up on screen instead.

  1. Go to Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
  2. Under Add a language, choose "Korean", check "Set as my Windows display language", then install.
  3. When the installation finishes, sign out and sign back in.

4. When you can't type in Korean

Installing Korean also adds the Korean input method. Over Remote Desktop, your keyboard's Korean/English (Han/Yeong) key sometimes isn't passed through to the server; in that case, click the A / 가 indicator on the taskbar at the bottom right of the screen to switch.
