New server checklist
If you've just received your server, go through the checks below in order.
1. Check your connection info
In Dashboard → server details, find the IP / login ID / password in the "Connection info" card.
- For a Windows server → RDP connection guide (if you ordered with bring your own license, please also register your license)
- For an Ubuntu (Linux) server → SSH connection guide (if you're new to Linux, also take a look at Using your server comfortably with VS Code)
2. If you can't connect, use the console
If RDP/SSH isn't working, you can reach your server's screen directly through the browser console (VNC) and check its state.
3. Set up basic security
Automated login attempts start hitting your server as soon as it's created. Change the password and install updates first with Basic server security setup, and turn on two-factor authentication for your Nevv account.
4. Name your server
If you plan to run several servers, name them early so you don't mix them up. See the basic server management guide.
5. Check your notification settings
Expiry reminders are on by default. If you don't want to receive them by email, you can turn them off as described in Setting up server expiry reminders.
6. Understand your traffic and zone
If you ordered in the Security Zone, there's no included traffic, so we recommend reading the Checking traffic usage and buying more guide ahead of time.
7. Mark the expiry date on your calendar
Your server may be stopped once its expiry date passes. See Renewing your server and renew before it expires.
